In the European law, the general legal framework is set forth in Directive 1993/13/CEE

of the Council from 5 April 1993, regarding abusive clauses in the contracts concluded with consumers, Directive 2008/48/CE regarding credit contracts for consumers and for the repeal of Directive 87/102/CEE of the Council.
