Can rights exist without a conception of human good and the common good?
Fernando Simón Yarza, Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Navarra, will deliver the lecture "Human Rights Discourse: Theoretical Challenges and Practical Consequences” on 12 October 2026, at 6:00 p.m., at the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest – "Petre Antonescu” Hall.
The lecture offers a critical perspective on the contemporary transformation of human rights discourse and argues for the recovery of a teleological conception of rights, grounded in the common good and the tradition of classical legal realism. The discussion will also address the practical implications of conflicts between rights and the relevance of the classical concept of ius – "the just thing” – for contemporary legal thought.
The conference is the fourth event in a series jointly organised by the Angelicum Thomistic Institute in Rome, the Thomistic Studies Circle of the University of Bucharest, the Centre for Natural Law Studies and Normative Analysis, and the Faculty of Philosophy. STOICA & ASOCIAȚII is pleased to support the organisation of this event.
